Winter Mountaineering Course - Ben Nevis, Glencoe and the Cairngorms



Our Introduction to Winter Mountaineering Course is ideal for people looking to tackle their first Scottish winter routes. If you are a winter walker or summer rock climber looking to tackle some of Scotland's classic ridges and mountaineering routes, such as Ledge Route on Ben Nevis and the Aonach Eagach in Glencoe, then this would be the ideal course for you.


Your time will be spent covering efficient movement over snow and rock and getting into some steeper terrain. Looking at placing protection to keep you and your partner safe, abseiling and the use and construction of Snow anchors.


The Introduction to Winter Mountaineering Course is run on a maximum ratio of 1:2 with prices starting at £330 for bespoke bookings. We do offer a number of Introduction to mountaineering courses through the winter, please see the dates below.

  • What experience do I need?

    This course is aimed at those either coming into winter with some climbing experience or winter walking experience. We can tailor the content to match your skill level.


    • Experience of walking in the Scottish mountains during the winter months or snowy peaks abroad would be ideal.
    • Experience of some easy rock climbs or scrambling in the UK or abroad would be a good starting point.

  • What is covered?

    During this course, we would aim to cover the below. We can only work with the conditions we have but will do ut very best to cover as much as we can to a reasonable level.


    • Route planning
    • Avalanche awareness and avoidance
    • basic anchors 
    • snow anchos
    • ropework
    • guidebook use and interpretation
    • climbing equipment

  • What kit do I need?

    • Crampon-compatible winter boots*
    • Crampons (compatible with your boots)*
    • A pair of technical climbing axes*
    • Waterproof jacket and trousers.
    • Socks.
    • Base layers are to be worn next to the skin. (not cotton)
    • Comfortable walking trousers. (not jeans)
    • Warm mid-layers. At least two, one to wear and one as an emergency layer.
    • Hats and at least 2 pairs of gloves.
    • Head torch.
    • A small personal first aid kit. Plasters etc.
    • A flask and/or drinks bottle, 1l should be enough.
    • A rucksack. Anything larger than a 30l pack will do and a waterproof liner
    • An orange emergency survival bag.
    • A pair of goggles (ideally with clear lenses)
    • A helmet
    • A harness
    • A belay plate and carabiner

    * - These items can be hired if needed.
